Q&A - Boat Dolly

Question:

The boat weighs around 450 lbs, with roughly half of that weight (about 225lbs) supported by the rear wheels and the other half resting on the ground at the front. The tires appear to be holding up well, seem fully inflated, and don't show signs of stress. We’re purchasing spare wheels just in case the current ones wear out under the load. Eventually, I plan to build a system to jack up the rear and rest it on boards, allowing the wheels to be removed. For now, though, the wheels have been performing well, and I plan to continue storing the boat this way.

Answer:

Yes. Your current setup sounds fine. As long as the boat remains stationary and the tires are properly inflated, there shouldn't be any significant concerns about premature tire wear. It’s similar to how a parked vehicle rests on its tires.

The main issue to watch out for is moving the boat while the tires are under-inflated. In that situation, the tire could shift on the rim and potentially damage the inner tube. To prevent this:

  • Keep tire pressure between 15–20 PSI.
  • Check the tire pressure once a month at first.

If they’re consistently holding pressure, you can check less frequently—just occasionally or as needed.

Having spare wheels on hand is a good precaution, and your idea for a jack and board setup to offload the wheels is also a sound long-term solution.
